Mink Creek at Alberta Orchard Wellness

Winter, according to the wisdom of the elements, is about dreaming, resting, relaxing, restoring, recharging and germinating seeds which will break through the thawing frozen ground of winter come spring when energy naturally moves upward and outward.  Plans made and action taken in harmony with the greater cycles of the cosmos, are much more likely to come to fruition. Over the last few years, I have been observing, studying and syncing myself with the elemental cycles as practiced by the ancients. I often call it ‘re-wilding’ myself. I started with Seasonal Wellness classes in 2015. In 2019 I printed 5 seasonal Element Wisdom Decks – 73 cards for each season totaling 365 days of clinical pearls, lifestyle tips, jedi mind tricks and some deeper dives into traditional medicine, physchology and spirit.

Nourish the water element during the winter season:

  •  Go to sleep early and rise with or just before the sun rises. I use an alarm clock only when I have an important appointment.  Natural light awakens me if my internal clock has not.  I am learning to trust this more and more each season.

  • Unplug: allow yourself to disconnect from all technology when the sun sets.  Yes, you read that right: read a book, light a fire, make a cup of tea, color, paint, play board games, take a long bath, make music, make love.  Do nothing. Need convincing? Check the research:

  • Watch every sunrise and sunset possible. Everything has a beginning, middle and end.  Watching the sun rising and setting reminds us as does observing our breath:  the beginning of the inhale, the middle of the inhale, the end of the inhale, a gap or turning, the beginning of the exhale, the middle of the exhale, the end of the exhale, a gap or turning and so it goes.  The most blissful moments as well as the most awkward or difficult days have a beginning, middle and end.  Our breath is like the incoming and outgoing tide of our life’s ocean. Following these cycles develops equanimity; equanimity undoes suffering.

  • Be with water as often as possible:  the ocean, rivers, creeks, waterfalls, springs water sound machines, aquariums, you tube water videos. Last winter, I planted 90 ferns in the creek that runs under the screened porch of my off grid tiny house (check back for that blog post).

  • Observe how water moves and flows around obstacles. How can we be more like water in our movement in our inner and outer worlds?

  • Replace one of your bathroom lights with a red light, so as not to wake your adrenals into a cortisol rise if you need to get up during the night.

We are dynamic beings.  We change We change under influences such as the seasons, life situation, and our current physical, mental, emotional and spiritual states and even the aging process.  Typically we have main constitution element and a secondary constitutional  (which may be the same or different as the main element). As we become more and more self aware and heal our imbalances, we will manifest and move more freely from one elemental state to the next during the natural generative cycle represented by the seasons.  Come back and take our quiz again in another iteration of yourself!

full moon illumination

The 12/12 full moon illuminated our final earth transition phase for the year.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine the transitional time between the changing of the seasons, is referred to as the ‘Doyo’. Each season corresponds to a specific element and the seasonal transition periods relate to Earth element(click to read Return to the Earth post). As we approach the Winter Solstice (December 21), we are currently in the transitional period between Autumn to Winter from the end of Metal to the start of Water.

Earth element is the transitional time between the seasons.

The Earth element is associated with times of change throughout the year, which happen between each of the seasons around the two solstices and the two equinoxes.  Solstices and equinoxes are astronomical event of the Sun reaching its highest position in the sky as viewed from the North or South Pole, one day to mark the onset of the winter season and one day to mark the onset of the summer season of 72 days each . On these days the tilt of the axis of the Earth (with respect to the Sun) is the maximum at 23° 26′. A transition phases begin about 7 days before each solstice and equinox and continue for about 7 days after, which constitute an approximate three-week period of adjustment between the seasons. Totaling 72 days, the Doyo, or Earth, is its own “mini-season”. It is a time of transformation and balancing, as well as a time of fluctuating temperature and weather before completely transitioning to the next season. It is common for people to get sick or have health complications during these transitional periods. It presents an opportunity for us to fortify our own internal Earth, to claim or reclaim our central and rightful position between heaven and Earth, and to allow the proper flow of energy (qi) and healing light through us.

A Haudenosaunee “Thanksgiving” Prayer:
A Native American Traditional Blessing

Today we have gathered and we see that the cycles of life continue. We have been given the duty to live in balance and harmony with each other and all living things. So now, we bring our minds together as one as we give greetings and thanks to each other as People.

Now our minds are one.

The Earth Mother

We are all thankful to our Mother, the Earth, for she gives us all that we need for life. She supports our feet as we walk about upon her. It gives us joy that she continues to care for us as she has from the beginning of time. To our Mother, we send greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Waters

We give thanks to all the Waters of the world for quenching our thirst and providing us with strength. Water is life. We know its power in many forms – waterfalls and rain, mists and streams, rivers and oceans. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to the spirit of water.

Now our minds are one.

The Fish

We turn our minds to all the Fish life in the water. They were instructed to cleanse and purify the water. They also give themselves to us as food. We are grateful that we can still find pure water. So, we turn now to the Fish and send our greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Plants

Now we turn toward the vast fields of Plant life. As far as the eye can see, the Plants grow, working many wonders. They sustain many life forms. With our minds gathered together, we give thanks and look forward to seeing Plant life for many generations to come.

Now our minds are one.

The Food Plants

With one mind, we turn to honor and thank all the Food Plants we harvest from the garden. Since the beginning of time, the grains, vegetables, beans and berries have helped the people survive. Many other living things draw strength from them too. We gather all the Plant Foods together as one and send them a greeting and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Medicine Herbs

Now we turn to all the Medicine herbs of the world. From the beginning, they were instructed to take away sickness. They are always waiting and ready to heal us. We are happy there are still among us those special few who remember how to use these plants for healing. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to the Medicines and to the keepers of the Medicines.

Now our minds are one.

The Animals

We gather our minds together to send greetings and thanks to all the Animal life in the world. They have many things to teach us as people. We see them near our homes and in the deep forests. We are glad they are still here and we hope that it will always be so.

Now our minds are one.

The Trees

We now turn our thoughts to the Trees. The Earth has many families of Trees who have their own instructions and uses. Some provide us with shelter and shade, others with fruit, beauty and other useful things. Many peoples of the world use a Tree as a symbol of peace and strength. With one mind, we greet and thank the Tree life.

Now our minds are one.

The Birds

We put our minds together as one and thank all the Birds who move and fly about over our heads. The Creator gave them beautiful songs. Each day they remind us to enjoy and appreciate life. The Eagle was chosen to be their leader. To all the Birds – from the smallest to the largest – we send our joyful greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

The Four Winds

We are all thankful to the powers we know as the Four Winds. We hear their voices in the moving air as they refresh us and purify the air we breathe. They help to bring the change of seasons. From the four directions they come, bringing us messages and giving us strength. With one mind, we send our greetings and thanks to the Four Winds.

Now our minds are one.

The Thunderers

Now we turn to the west where our Grandfathers, the Thunder Beings, live. With lightning and thundering voices, they bring with them the water that renews life. We bring our minds together as one to send greetings and thanks to our Grandfathers, the Thunderers.

Now our minds are one.

The Sun

We now send greetings and thanks to our eldest Brother, the Sun. Each day without fail he travels the sky from east to west, bringing the light of a new day. He is the source of all the fires of life. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to our Brother, the Sun.

Now our minds are one.

Grandmother Moon

We put our minds together and give thanks to our oldest grandmother, the Moon, who lights the night-time sky. She is the leader of women all over the world, and she governs the movement of the ocean tides. By her changing face we measure time, and it is the Moon who watches over the arrival of children here on Earth. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to our Grandmother, the Moon.

Now our minds are one.

The Stars

We give thanks to the Stars who are spread across the sky like jewelry. We see them in the night, helping the Moon to light the darkness and bringing dew to the gardens and growing things. When we travel at night, they guide us home. With our minds gathered together as one, we send greetings and thanks to all the Stars.

Now our minds are one.

The Enlightened Teachers

We gather our minds to greet and thank the enlightened Teachers who have come to help throughout the ages. When we forget how to live in harmony, they remind us of the way we were instructed to live as people. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to these caring Teachers.

Now our minds are one.

The Creator

Now we turn our thoughts to the Creator, or Great Spirit, and send greetings and thanks for the gifts of Creation. Everything we need to live a good life is here on this Mother Earth. For all the love that is still around us, we gather our minds together as one and send our choicest words of greetings and thanks to the Creator.

Now our minds are one.

We have now arrived at the place where we end our words. Of all the things we have named, it was not our intention to leave anything out. If something was forgotten, we leave it to each individual to send such greetings and thanks in their own way.

Now our minds are one.

We invite you to stay in touch. xoxoxo Sarita

Divine Feminine Divine Masculine: Guest Blog Post by Teresa Cribelli, PhD, Eminent Reiki Master

Reiki is a, gentle, compassionate method for bringing energetic balance and clearing on the physical, emotional, and mental levels. Because Reiki is about balance, it can be especially helpful at the changing of seasons.  All versions of Reiki are compassionate and loving with the capacity to bring deep peace and healing, while Eminent ReikiTM focuses on balancing the feminine and masculine energies we all carry within us. Fall and winter, seasons that are energetically feminine, provide us opportunities to focus on our inner world.  In traditional societies located in parts of the world with changing seasons, the winter was a time of quiet and reflection (not inaction, but a turning to the inner forces that nourish and revitalize us).  It was a period of stored seeds and pickled vegetables and preserved fruits, of relying on the resources harvested and built up during the bright spring and summer months.  Winter shifts us from the outward, masculine seasons (yang) to the inner, feminine seasons (yin).

Reiki energy can help us calibrate our physical bodies with these seasonal energetic shifts.  During winter the focus may be on the feminine, but that does not mean the masculine goes away.  Rather, the changing seasons can be seen as a pendulum that moves between the inner and the outer, the revitalizing feminine and the energizing masculine.  Winter is in balance with summer; the two are part of the whole, and when they operate in equilibrium, each supports the other – the masculine and feminine in balance.  There is the very old Greek story of the goddess of the harvest, Demeter.  When her daughter, Persephone, is kidnapped by Hades and taken to the Underworld, Demeter falls into a deep depression and winter remains well into the time of spring and summer.  The world withers into dust and grey skies and people cannot grow their seeds.  The feminine out of balance leads to inertia.  In another Greek myth, Helios the sun god, in the form of a charioteer drives his team of horses across the sky each day, bringing warmth and energizing light to the world.  When his son, Phaethon, steals the chariot one morning and loses control of the horses, the day lasts for weeks, and all of the plants on earth catch fire and burn. The people are thirsty and hot and again have no food. Too much yin and the earth stagnates, too much yang and it burns.

As we move from summer into fall, we can look at this as rebalancing on the macro and the micro levels – the masculine seasons moving into the feminine seasons both within and without.  While the seasons lean toward the feminine or the masculine, over the course of the year, they are in balance.

This is a useful way to think about Eminent ReikiTM; bringing balance to the feminine and the masculine energies so that we are nourished and energized year round.

Reiki Description

The practice of Reiki is an ancient healing art, one that is the energy of love and compassion. It supports us through clearing and balancing the energies of the systems and bodies, creating opportunity for health and wellbeing on all levels. Reiki can be received with the practitioner’s hands on or off of the body. The client simply relaxes and receives as the practitioner senses where clearing is needed and allows the Reiki energy to flow to the source of pain. Reiki energy can only be used for positive outcomes.  An all-purpose tool that introduces ease and grace into the lives of those who receive and practice it, Reiki is a cherished method of thousands. There are many types of Reiki practiced on Earth at this time; each variation is an expression of love and support.

Eminent ReikiTM is a new approach to Reiki with a special male/female component unique to the Eminent ReikiTM process. Not only are the male and female used together to create a special healing experience, they are specifically blended together into a new energy that is part of the Eminent ReikiTM attunement.  A key component of healing is balancing the male and female within and Eminent ReikiTM addresses this need specifically in the energy and approach to healing.

What got you interested in Reiki?  What training have you received?

My pathway to practicing Reiki began with acupuncture.  About 20 years ago I consulted an acupuncturist for a chronic pain condition (an MD recommended I try acupuncture – traditional western medical treatments had not been effective for managing my pain).  I began to feel much better after two weeks of acupuncture treatments, and I found that when the pain returned at night (I had been having trouble sleeping) I could make it go away by meditating on the acupuncture points used in my sessions.  Through visualizing the acupuncture points I could attain the same level of relaxation I experienced when I was being treated.  It was an accidental discovery that ended up being life changing.

In a sense, acupuncture taught me how to meditate and relax, but at that point I still saw moving energy as something outside of myself, I needed a third party to help make the shift.  About ten years later my sister became a Reiki practitioner and gave me a session after I suffered a painful miscarriage.  Her hands became hot during that session and it felt so healing – relaxing and calming on both a physical and emotional level – that I knew I wanted to learn how to do it too.  From there I took the Eminent ReikiTMclasses in Colorado and received my attunements.  This past summer I received my level three Master Practitioner attunement in Eminent ReikiTM, a version of Reiki that focuses on balancing the masculine and feminine energies we all carry within us.  My original intent when I first started practicing Reiki was to help relax and heal physical ailments, but in my self-practice I have found I focus more on emotional healing.  Reiki can be a wonderful method for letting go of worries and anxieties from the past.

What got you interested in collage?

I love illustrations and images – it is has been something I have been attracted to my entire life. When I was five I ripped all the horse pictures out of a hand-me-down set of story books.  I could not read yet, and I wanted to free the illustrations from the books.  I had so much fun arranging and re-arranging those horse illustrations before I realized with a shock that books were not supposed to be torn apart.  Nonetheless, I kept coming back to making collages.  I used to shellac images of animals from Ranger Rick magazine onto scraps from my father’s woodpile, and I still have a collage I made in second grade art class.  It contains an image of a plastic horse and cowgirl from a toy catalog, a sewing machine, some aluminum foil, and a photo of Evonne Goolagong, the tennis player.  I have no idea why I put those subjects together at the age of seven, but they illustrate the thrill and power of collage – juxtaposing seemingly unrelated images together in interesting ways.  For me it is a form of meditation.  It is a way of expressing my inner world, an aspect of myself that does not manifest in a linear way.

How do Reiki and/or collage change your day to day experience of the world?

Both are a form of meditation, of accessing the calm center that is inside all of us. Reiki helps relax and release in the realm of energy, while collage facilitates self-expression.  Both help bring to consciousness what needs to be healed or understood or joyfully expressed.  It is a way to practice self-love.  As physical objects collages also become a meditation  – for me and the people who view them.  By contemplating the juxtaposition of images, we can, to quote the photographer Minor White, “[learn] to make chance moments occur by looking at anything until [we see] what else it is.”  This shift in perspective can facilitate healing and true self expression.

Love Heals. Period.

In Memoriam

In a recent post about Fire pericardium, I introducted you to Dr. Rachel Eppinga, ND, LAc.  Rachel passed from this world into the light on the autumn equinox. Her body was diseased with cancer. I’ve included the last message she sent out to her community/tribe below. Rachel was a wayshower of how to reflect and transmute beauty in any situation; she was a beacon of light, a gatherer of women to heal together.

I was recently gifted a very special Love Qigong from my dear colleague Rachel Eppinga, ND, LAc, when we gathered in Hara Mara, Mexico this past February during my first ever women’s retreat. It was a magical jungle meeting ocean, organic, fresh eats from the sea fest ~ full of love, support, opening, ritual, sunsets, qigong and play!  I encourage you to visit her site, explore her story of Love Heals. Period., and be inspired by her love notes and medicine. I will be offering her heart focused sequence, which acknowledges the directions and activates our chakras in a form filled with her deep connections and love of dance. Dr. Rachel Eppinga’s Love Qigong sequence, which she blessed for me to teach to our community, is briefly shown in the film clip linked below. This heart opening move is repeated throughout a sequence that honors direction, energy, ourselves, and each other.

VIDEO LINK

Dr. Rachel Eppinga is Board Certified in the state of Oregon. She attended the National University of Natural Medicine to acquire her Doctorate in Naturopathy and Masters of Science in Classical Chinese Medicine. She holds a B.S. in mathematics and physics from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR. Her list of certifications and continuing education is long.

As a Naturopathic Physician, Acupuncturist, Integrative Life and Wellness Coach, Intuitive and an individual who lives her teachings; her unique approach offers new perspectives of wellness through the ancient teachings that remind us that our bodies are sacred and deserve our attention and appreciation. She believes by prioritizing our own health and self care, we contribute to the healing of our communities and the planet.

Earth is a grounding force during this time of transition between the seasons. After all of the activity of spring and summer, the Earth element helps us to get centered and balanced during late summer as we prepare for the autumn harvest and for winter, the season of rest and restore.

Nature moves from the joy and blossoming of Summer to the harvest and returnings of Late Summer.  As the days grow shorter, the temperatures begin to decrease. Earth transforms into Metal as the Season of Autumn arrives with downward momentum of the generative cycles of the seasons.

The Chinese associate the concept of “decrease” with late summer while simultaneously referring to it as the period of abundance ~ both are true as the complexity of truth often is. Physically and spiritually, this period of late summer is a time for slowing down and gathering. It is a time when we realize and harvest the fruits of our labor. In our spiritual lives, the Earth element allows us to internalize and learn to nourish and care for ourselves, slowing down toward the decline of fall and pause of winter.

Tips for living in harmony with the late summer EARTH season

    • Practice gratitude for the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Autumn is the season of harvest, when we reap what we planted in the spring and what bears fruit from our perennial crops. It is the time to gather nature’s bounty from our gardens. We eat with gratitude and preserve nourishment for the coming winter months. Here at the AOW, the green kiwis are building their sugar content for picking, and the persimmons are also ripening with their blush of orange. Stay tuned for information about U-pick opportunities coming up at AOW.

      Persimmons are ripening at AOW.

    • Be thoughtful of how you can nourish ourselves and others. In this bountiful, harvest season, be sure to enjoy the benefits of giving. It doesn’t have to be a  great or elaborate gift or act. A simple gesture, kind deed, or word of encouragement given today is beyond measure to someone in need.
    • Be aware of your life’s harvest. Think about yourself, your relationships, and your work, you legacy. What parts of your life are yielding fruit? Where is the harvest poor and stunted? What is  rich in harvest? A positive affirmation for transition: Don’t Worry. Be Happy. When feeling filled with worry and self doubt, remember that this too can pass along with the season. If not, it is an opportunity to concentrate self-care toward your Earth element!
    • Consider what you need to “let go” during the coming autumn season. It is the time to reflect on the past year and critically examine what in our lives we choose to nourish, and those habits and behaviors that are negative or destructive, which we should want to eliminate. Release old resentments or hurts.  Practice letting go of the old so that the new can be born. Start anew.
    • Go Unprocessed October.  For several years now, I’ve taken the ‘pledge’ to eat only unprocessed foods during the month of October.  It helps me bypass the slippery sugary slope of Halloween to Christmas treats and affirms my commitment to a  lifestyle of real food.  Join me this year in a community of tips, recipes, kitchen hacks, support, and inspiration. Click here to learn more and scroll to take the pledge of a month of unprocessed foods!

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, autumn is the season of the Metal element. Metal represents our core issues, the most basic parts of ourselves. The energy connected with Metal is attracted to beauty and symmetry. The emotion connected with Metal is grief and sadness as well as courage and catharsis. Themes of Metal include:  boundaries, integrity, persistence, judgment, competition, transmutation, value, patriarchy, the divine masculine and our spiritual connect to heaven. In autumn, we say goodbye to the abundance of summer and prepare for the winter. Metal connects us with the ability to let go of the past and allow space for the new.

Let go of stress by shaking it out!

Release tensions and revive yourself naturally. The simple movement of shaking is a powerful and effective qigong technique. Qigong shaking cleans and clears blockages. You’ll feel relaxed and energized with just one session of shaking.

What is Qigong? (pronounced Chee-Gung)

Qigong opens the flow of energy in the acupuncture meridians.

Qigong is a mind-body-spirit practice that combines posture, movement, breathing technique, self-massage, sound, and focused intent. Qigong opens the flow of energy in the acupuncture meridians. Qigong movements condition tendons, ligaments, and muscles; tone our vital organs and connective tissues; and promote circulation of body fluids. Numerous studies show that qigong is effective in helping to heal health issues ranging from high blood pressure and chronic illness to emotional conditions, mental stress, and spiritual unrest.

Qigong is considered an ‘internal’ tai chi.  Meaning, that the focus is on balancing the internal meridian, organs, and body systems. There is evidence for acute physiological and psychological effects of qigong exercise in older practitioners.

Qigong Shaking Introduction:

Set up in Universal Stance: Place feet hip distance apart with toes pointing slightly inwards, in partial universal or horse stance, weight slightly on the outside of the foot. Check posture: tail bone slightly tucked, chin slightly tucked, knees bent like riding a horses, feet parallel, arms hanging . Relax.

Shake body, relax and shake. Shake open the pores of the skin, Shake into the tendons, into the muscle layer, then the tendons and ligaments, connective tissue, deep into the organs, the bones, and the nervous system. You can use the sounds of the elements, the organs, color.

Notice the body and any blockages.  Shake into them. Start with three minutes building up to five minutes.Become aware of your breath as you shake shake. Sound/vocalization helps release tensions and blockages. Continue shaking also lifting and dropping on your heels. Now continue shaking.  Shake into your skin, your muscles, your bones, your organs. Shake free form, what into what ever feels stuck or tense. Shake like no one is watching!

Feel your body, feel the dynamism within. Settle into yourself, the space around you.  Feel your breath.  Find your universal self, stance (above) then let your arms float up, elbows bent slightly, arms relaxed, with a small weighted string pulling your elbows ever so slightly downward, hands in front, gathering the light energy in front of you, recognizing the the source of it all ~ the  universe within.  Feel beyond your skin, into the space outside yourself. Listen to the sounds around you. Feel the boundries, the edges and the boundlessness and the lack of edges. Notice your aliveness.

Notice the parts of your body that are tense or inflammed and shake it out. Be mindful of your body and focus on the areas in need of attention and stress release. Have fun with it and your body will thank you!

Here’s a video with a quick and easy shaking demonstration that I think you will enjoy! I am inspired and feel the need to get to video-ing for y’all!

Qigong Earth Sequence; Heaven & Earth Rotation

You can continue to cultivate wellness during this Earth season by practicing exercises for healing the spleen with Qigong support. Stand with your feet touching the earth (or visualize this if indoors) in the universal stance, emulating a horse riding posture, with a relaxed yet dignified upright spine. Wake up the meridian and organ networks with three to five minutes of qigong shaking then relax and feel the energy of the earth support and heavenly flow within your body. Wake the organ spleen by tapping and repeating eight times the sound of the spleen: whooooo  (like the wise owl calling to us). Open the gates of heaven (top of head ~ meeting of ten thousand things) and earth (bottom of feet ~ bubbling spring) again.  Pivot from the lower back with smooth and continuous action. The left palm, facing earth, pushes downward while the right palm, faces heaven, pulls upward.  At the end of the pivot, alternate hand positions.  Repeat 40 times while imagining healing, golden light internally healing and balancing your spleen, stomach and pancreas.

More on letting go of stress and anxiety for the Return of Earth!

Stimulation of the vagus nerve plays an important role in the management of anxiety and mental health issues. The vagus nerve is the longest running cranial nerve in your body. It is one of ten paired cranial nerves and runs from the stem of your brain all the way down to your gut. The word “vagus” translates to “wandering” in Latin, and the vagus nerve certainly does that. As the longest and most complex of all the cranial nerves, it starts at the stem of the brain, behind the ears before it meanders down the sides of the neck, through the chest, and eventually ends in the abdomen linking the brain to the heart, lungs, throat, and gut.

Vagus Nerve Connects the Brain and Gut

This nerve is the sensory network that informs the brain of what’s going on in our organs, most specially the digestive tract (stomach and intestines), lungs and heart, spleen, liver, and kidneys.

Significant and important research has been making the news about a microbiota-gut-brain axis. Read up on this fascinating subject here. Also this article discusses the science behind gut microbiota, brain function and stress related disorders.

People with good vagal tone can relax faster after a stress and are more capable of regulating blood glucose levels, reducing chances of diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular disease. Poor vagal tone, however, is associated with chronic inflammation and basket load of subsequent health issues. Recent research presented by the European League Against Rheumatism indicate that vagus nerve stimulation significantly reduces symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

Relevant to Earth element health, I’ve collected these research links for you:

How to practically soothe your nervous system:

  • Take a cold shower or plunge
  • Splash cold water on face & neck
  • Sing, laugh, chant, hum, & hug
  • Restore the microbe of the gut
  • Relax jaw tension
  • Meditate on loving kindness

三焦

The fire element, which peaks during the summer season, not only governs the heart but also the small intestine, pericardium, and the TRIPLE BURNER.

SO WHAT THE HECK IS A TRIPLE BURNER?

Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Traditional Medicine in Portland, Oregon defines and discusses (click here) this mysterious organ recognized in Chinese Medicine.

The triple burner or triple warmer is a unique concept in Chinese Medicine and there is no similar organ in western medicine. It is a collective term describing the upper, middle, and lower burners. The Chinese word “triple burner” translates to “three parts which burn or scorch.”

The upper burner, located above the diaphragm, includes the heart and lungs. The middle burner includes the region above the naval and below the diaphragm encompassing the spleen and stomach. The lower burner, located below the naval, includes the liver, kidneys, large intestine, small intestine, and bladder. It is noteworthy that these location descriptions refer to a functional meaning of the triple burner and not actual physical locations.

The San Jiao in the body.

The triple burner/warmer is the only primary acupuncture point without a physical organ association.  It is classified as a yang organ, as it rules circulation and regulates energy movement throughout the entire anatomy and organ systems.  In Chinese Medicine, the body is divided into three jiaos (divisions):  upper, middle, and lower.  The triple burner or warmer acts on all three. The upper burner controls intake, the middle burner controls transformation, while the lower burner controls elimination.

Triple burner translates into western medicine concepts of:  immune, glands, lymph, metabolism, neurotransmitter, hormone as well as body composition and temperature.

Basically, processes that are shared among all organs.

All patients, in my practice, with auto immune concerns are treated with a special emphasis on the triple burner and the source organ of imbalance.

TRIPLE BURNER MERIDIAN

The Triple Burner Meridian (also known as San Jiao, Triple Heater, Triple Energizer) is a yang meridian and is coupled with the Pericardium Meridian.

In the classic Chinese medical text, The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, The Huang Di Nei Jing says that “The triple burner is the controller of the entire circulation of body fluid”. Therefore, imbalance of the triple burner leads to fluid retention (edema) and difficulty urinating. Treatment of these conditions focuses on restoring balance and harmony of the affected triple burner organs such as the lungs, spleen, or kidneys.

An abstract for the Heart Disease Research Foundation, New York, NY explores the meridian-like networks of internal organs and the corresponding Chinese 12 main meridians. Interesingly, the study found that the Triple Burner meridian had additional Testosterone (in the male) and Estrogen (especially Estriol and Estradiol in the female), while the heart had additional Atrial Natriuretic Peptide.

The triple burner meridian begins at the tip of the ring finger, by the outside corner of the nail, crosses between the knuckles of the fourth and fifth fingers, up to the wrist. From the wrist, it ascends between the radius and ulna bones of the forearm, through the elbow, and up the back of the arm to the shoulder. From the shoulder, it moves to the chest connecting with the pericardium, the upper burner, the abdomen and the middle and lower burners. The meridian then exits the chest at the collarbone and moves up the side of the neck and around to the back of the ear.

Examples of triple burner meridian ailments:

TW2 – Yemen – Headache, malaria, sore throat, eye redness, deafness, numb fingers

TW10 – Tianjing – Migraine, deafness, pain in elbow and arm, epilepsy

TW12 – Xiaolou – Headache, rigid neck,  shoulder and back pain

TW13 – Naohui – Spasm and pain of the shoulder and arm

TW23 – Sizhukong – Headache, dizziness, redness and swelling and pain of the eye, twitching of the eyelid, toothache, epilepsy

Not only does the triple burner meridian control the movement and transformation of solids and fluids in the body, it also governs the production and circulation of life nourishing and protective energy.

Triple Burner Imbalances: Issues with the head, ears, eyes and throat as well as diseases involving the parts of the body where the meridian runs including the gallbladder meridian, pericardium meridian, small intestine meridian.

Triple Burner Balanced: When the triple burner is in balance, a person displays characteristics of kindheartedness, social warmth and interaction, mental stability, and emotional joy.

PLACES OF POWER

In my opinion, our relationship with place is ruled by the triple burner/warmer.  Places have energetic, karmic, and historic imprints that resonance with each of us individually and collectively.  There are places on the globe in which we feel ‘grounded’ and other places in which we feel ‘scattered’; places where we thrive and places where we are challenged; places that bring our best qualities and places that bring out our worst qualities.  So be aware or become aware of how place influences your health, your success, your dreams. Find your sacred space.

This week, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians celebrates at Nanih Waiya.  The sacred mound is the origin location of the Choctaw Nation.  It was returned to the Choctaw Nation in 2008 by the State of Mississippi after private landowners appreciated the cultural significance enough to deed it to the state as a park. An elder in the tribe shared the following with me: a very long time ago when the tribe was journeying, wandering, seeking a place to settle, the medicine man would stick a pole in the ground each night where they camped. Every morning he would lead his people in the direction that the was pole leaning. One morning the pole was standing upright. This site marks Nanih Waiya – the beginning of the Choctaw Nation (the end of their journey). This sacred site and nearby cave have powerful and rejuvenating energy as it is the birthplace of the tribe.

ENERGY MEDICINE

Teacher of energy medicine and author of Energy Medicine, Donna Eden teaches people to direct their energies for health and happiness, using methods similar to acupressure, therapeutic touch, and qi gong. According to Donna, the triple warmer affects the immune system and our ability to manage stress.  The exercises below, from Donna’s program, can help relieve tension and bring calmness.

Triple Burner Exercises

  • Place your fingers at your temples. Hold for one deep breath, breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth;
  • On another deep breath, slowly slide your fingers up and around your ears, smoothing the skin while maintaining some pressure;
  • On the out breath, slide your fingers down and behind your neck and hang them on your shoulders;
  • Push your fingers into your shoulders, and when you are ready drag them over the top of your shoulders and smooth them to the middle of your chest over your heart.

This exercise can calm anxiety and worry.

  • On the back side of your hand, find the groove between the ring and pinky fingers;
  • Tap into the groove while thinking of stress (You can also rest your flat hand on your heart and tap in the groove.).

Take a minute to check out this video demonstrating how to use some of the techniques for the triple burner based on Donna Eden’s methods.

And last but not least!

The Triple Burner Benefits from Green Juice and Smoothies

The triple burner benefits from green juice, green smoothies and lots of clean, green infused waters. With the garden still producing cucumbers in abundance, mint in the ground, and pears on the trees, try a cucumber and pear smoothie blend.

I like to puree and freeze green produce in ice cubes to toss in the blender for a quick, light meal, or pick-me-up refreshment on the go. The night before I travel, I blend the perishables that don’t make it into my travel cooler, in this case lots of cucumbers. Ice cube trays are perfect to quick freeze, pop, and bag my fruit and veggie blends.   I get pretty creative with the blender and rarely use a recipe for my smoothies!

  • pear (or kiwi): seasonal sweetness
  • cucumber: freshness, electrolytes
  • mint:  digestive support
  • seeds, chia or pumpkin, or nut butter, almond or  cashew:  protein energy (ideally soaked the night before)
  • hemp protein powder: optional
  • Add a dash of cinnamon or ginger for excitment
  • Blend it all up with some unsweetened almond milk or green tea!

ENJOY!

Our natural state is to move in rhythm with the seasonal tides. Summertime brings with it a desire to immerse ourselves in the lush splendor of nature and revel in the joy of life. Like the world around us, we lean into the Solar energies of playfulness, growth, expansion, and manifestation; welcoming the season of fiery transformation! During these long, jubilant days, the heavy air can feel nearly electric with the flurry of activity around us. Balmy nights bring with them a choir of insects and frogs exalting in the all too short time between Summer Solstice and the harvest season. What follows is both traditional wisdom, and my personal experience working in partnership with crystal allies, to attune to the energies of the seasons and resolve imbalance within the subtle body.

In the human energy body, or electromagnetic field, the energy of Summer resonates with both the Sacral and the Solar Plexus Chakras, invoking the elements of water and fire. Due to their simple but perfect crystalline structure at the atomic level, crystals have the ability to consistently hold a higher vibration, or frequency, than ours. As a complementary modality, crystals and stones can offer tremendous support for healing and recalibrating the major energy centers of the body. So how does that work? In theory, this is due to the Principle of Entrainment. A crystal’s base resonant frequency, or rate of vibration, is similar to but usually higher than our own. As we work with these allies, the stones are able to entrain with our electromagnetic field raising our vibration to a healthier place, recalibrating imbalances, and helping to clear energetic blockages thus allowing for the movement of stagnant energy via their high harmonic emissions.

In the physical body, the Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) is located near the sacrum at the base of the spine and between the pubic bone and navel; physically corresponding to the Sacral Nerve Plexus. It exerts influence over the reproductive organs, the lymph, the blood, and other bodily fluids. It is our creative power center, the place where we experience the sweetness of life, the joy of living. This is where we physically feel into our intuition (think “gut feeling”). Unimpeded Sacral energy is essential to manifestation, creativity, and to experiencing the full spectrum of human emotions. The second of the seven major chakras expresses as the color orange making orange stones perfect for work with the Sacral Chakra. Your own intuition is the best guide when choosing stones to work with. Below are some of my personal favorites:

  • Carnelian: balancing and healing ovaries and testes, increases vitality and energy (BIG TIME), brings an influx of life force, sexual and creative energies
  • Vanadinite: increases stamina and perseverance, creativity, accomplishment
  • Orange Calcite: creativity, sexuality, playfulness, confidence, innovation, energy

Sacral Crystals

The Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) is located between the navel and the xiphoid process at the base of the rib cage and corresponds to the Solar Plexus nerve cluster. This energy center is responsible for generating Agni or digestive fire while governing the digestive organs and processes. Energetically, it is the seat of our personal power, home to the ego, our self confidence, personal will, and influences the way we assert ourselves in the world. The third of the seven major chakras expresses as the color yellow. All yellow or golden stones are appropriate for work with the Manipura Chakra. Here are few to get you started:

  • Citrine: premier stone for strengthening personal will and awakening creativity, increases ability to bring thought into physical form (manifestation), stimulates the endocrine system, and encourages proper digestion and metabolism
  • Pyrite: strengthens will, helps one overcome fear and take action, boosts vitality
  • Tiger Eye: balance between extremes, increases vitality, grounds the Solar ray
  • Golden Labradorite: promotes confidence in social situations, creativity, manifestation

Solar Plexus Stones

Okay, we have the stones, now what do we do with them?

One of the easiest ways to work with the stones is by simply wearing them as jewelry.  Adorning yourself with rings and bracelets made of your favorite orange or yellow stones keeps them in close proximity to the actual energy center, however, simply having them on your person works well too. The idea is to keep the stones in your electro-magnetic field which for most folks can extend up to 4 feet around the physical body. Keeping stones in your pockets also keeps them close to both of these energy centers. Hold your stones while in meditation or prayer to attune to their frequencies especially while reciting mantra or focusing on your intentions. You may enjoy placing the stones directly on the specific energy center while in relaxation. The most effective stones to work with in this way are at least the size of a quarter. Having large specimen stones or crystal grids in your work or living space is a great way to amplify and further surround yourself with the stones’ energetic influence.

Attuning to the ever-changing energies of the seasons while opening to understanding your own energetic nature provides an essential opportunity for lasting transformation and deep healing. Working with crystals can offer clarity and insight, a pathway to working with the higher self, and support as a complimentary healing modality alongside all other healing practices. On the wheel of the year, as we reach the crescendo of life-force energy in the world, I hope you will be inspired to welcome energy work with crystals into your life to grow, embrace your expansive nature, and transform.

So where do we find these allies and more information?
